As someone who has two kids, a cat, and a dog, I’m no stranger to living in an accident-prone household. And, no one wants to live with the overpowering scent of cat or dog urine, so that’s where stain and odor removers come in. Keeping the air and floors clean is especially key to maintaining the quality of our indoor life as well as not driving away houseguests. I recently tested the Sunny & Honey Pet Stain & Odor Miracle remover on several washable rugs of different pile heights, patterns, and sizes. Keep reading to see if I’ll be keeping it in my cleaning cabinet.

Process and Ease of Use: A versatile cleaner

According to Sunny & Honey, the maker of the pet stain and odor cleaner, it is an “advanced bio-enzymatic formula specifically designed to quickly and safely remove all organic stains and odors caused by urine, feces, vomit, and drool.” It comes in a 32-ounce spray bottle. 

Like all of the other products we tested, first, you have to soak up the urine and stain with an absorbent towel. Then, spray a “generous amount” on the affected area and leave it to soak for 10 minutes. Afterward, dry the area with another absorbent towel. For severe odors and stains, the brand recommends soaking the area thoroughly with the product for at least an hour, then drying it with a towel.

We followed the instructions to the letter on both old and new stains. The product did not cause color damage to our patterned textiles. You can use it on multiple types of surfaces, such as hardwood floors, home and car upholstery, leather, and tile. A big plus is that it doesn’t require a carpet steamer or extra appliances to get rid of the stain or odors.

Effectiveness and Scent: A minty fresh miracle worker

The product is labeled as having a “spring mint scent,” which we found to be fairly strong but not bothersome. About 15 minutes after the cleaning process, we no longer smelled urine on the area of the rug we treated.

We also ran our rugs through the washing machine and let them air dry to see if the cleaning spray was still effective after a wash cycle. We didn’t see any visible stain lines with our naked eye or notice any lingering urine smells. Several weeks later, the rugs were still odorless. We even used a UV blacklight to detect whether the stains were still there, and the stain was not detectable.

Ingredients: Seems mostly natural

The company lists the following ingredients in this product: water, enzymes, nonionic surfactant, fragrance, and opacifier. It also notes that the product is safe to use around children and pets. However, if you are sensitive or have allergies to perfumes, the cleaner has a strong, minty fragrance.

Price: Pricier than most

Retailing at $40 for a 32-ounce spray bottle, the Sunny & Honey Pet Stain & Odor Miracle is more expensive than the other pet stain products we tested, but you can often find it on sale for less. Other similar options cost anywhere from $6 to $15, while some higher-end specialty brands come between $20 to $40.

Pet lovers may also be happy to know that the company donates 10 percent of its profits to pet-related causes. And, Sunny and Honey doesn't test its products on animals. This cleaning solution is also made in the U.S.

The Competition: Lots of effective options, but it comes down to your nose

Out of the four enzyme-based pet stain cleaners that we tested, Sunny & Honey Pet Stain & Odor Miracle came in third due to its higher price and strong mint scent. See how it compared to the other products.

Angry Orange Pet Odor Eliminator: We also tested the Angry Orange Pet Odor Eliminator 8-ounce concentrated bottle ($23 MSRP), which is the equivalent of one gallon after it’s mixed with water. We preferred this cleaner for its fragrance; we liked that its citrus scent wasn’t overwhelming. We didn’t mind that it required some pre-mixing in a separate container, in fact, it was preferable since we didn’t need to store a large container. This formula was our favorite for its fragrance, its effectiveness, and small but potent bottle size.

Bubba’s Rowdy Friends Pet Stain & Odor Terminator: This natural enzyme cleaner ($58 MSRP) comes in a one-gallon bottle without a spray nozzle and is approved by the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI). The mint scent was the least overpowering of all of the products we tested, and we also found it was effective at getting rid of our pets’ pee stains and odors. The mild fragrance was its biggest positive for us.

Rocco & Roxie Professional Strength Stain & Odor Eliminator: Another natural, bio-enzymatic formula ($20 MSRP), this CRI-approved cleaner also comes in a 32-ounce spray bottle. The overpowering scent made it our least favorite of the products we tried, but it was effective, keeping our rugs urine-free after cleaning.
