The crowd-pleasing charcuterie board has a new companion—the barkuterie board. Designed to satisfy a dog’s palette, this canine-friendly dish brings together an assortment of biscuits, veggies, jerky, peanut butter, and dog-safe fruits

“A barkuterie board is a nice centerpiece and a conversation starter, but it also keeps dogs safe by letting guests know which foods are okay to give as a treat,” Rosanna Pansino told The Spruce Pets.

Pansino is one of the internet’s most popular bakers and a dog mom to two Frenchies with food names, Coconut and Blueberry Muffin. She championed the barkuterie board at small gatherings of friends with Frenchies, an event which quickly became a monthly potluck-style brunch, with both humans and hounds in attendance. “A barkuterie board is perfect for every event, all year long: football, holidays, doggie parties, anything.”

We spoke with Pansino–who playfully referred to her career in the spotlight as “playing with food all day”—to learn how she puts a barkuterie board together. To begin, Pansino recommends “starting from the middle with a peanut butter dipping sauce, or your favorite treat, and building around with an assortment of textures, flavors, and colors.”

Pansino recommended eight essentials for making your own barkuterie board, including must-have tools for serving and her signature addition, which is easy to adopt for your own barkuterie.

Human charcuterie boards typically have a selection of savory, thinly sliced meats. The BLUE Nudges Jerky Cuts Chicken Flavored Treats have a tender, charred texture that dogs love.

“I like Blue Buffalo treats because my dogs love them, and they are made with high-quality, all-natural ingredients,” Pansino told The Spruce Pets.

Plus, from February 7-13 (the week leading up to the Puppy Bowl and that other Big Game), Blue Buffalo will donate a pack of treats to the Helen Woodward Animal Center in San Diego for every purchase of BLUE Nudges Jerky Cuts Chicken flavored treats, up to 100,000 treat packs.

“These teeny tiny treats from Blue Buffalo are stinking adorable and literally heart-shaped,” Pansino said.

Blue Buffalo Bits Natural Soft Moist Training Treats are appropriate for dogs of any size, but they also have a soft texture which makes them easy to break into smaller pieces. They are low in calories and come in a variety of meaty flavors, chicken, beef, turkey, and salmon.

Biscuits

“Baking your own dog biscuits from scratch takes a lot of time and effort, so I like to add Blue Buffalo Health Bars to my barkuterie boards.”

Available in a variety of flavors, like Bacon, Egg, & Cheese and Apple & Yogurt, these crunchy doggie cookies are free from artificial preservatives and colors. They also come in mini sizes and seasonal flavors.

Natural Peanut Butter

“Peanut butter is the perfect dipping sauce for everything on a barkuterie board.”

Similar to honey or jam on a charcuterie board, Pansino likes to add natural peanut butter to her board to pair with fruits and veggies. “Watching the dogs chew on an apple slice with the peanut butter is entertainment for everyone,” she said.

(Most natural peanut butter is safe for dogs, but double check the label for Xylitol, which is a naturally occurring sweetener that is toxic for dogs.)

Dog-Friendly Shaped Fruits & Veggies

“I like to get creative with cookie cutters, and that is probably my signature piece on a barkuterie board.”

Pansino recommends cutting fruits and vegetables into playful shapes. She likes to cut thick carrots into thin slices and use a bone-shaped cutter. “It adds variety and pops of color,” she told us.

You can also add cantaloupe, bananas, cucumbers, and blueberries. The Magigift Dog Cookie Cutter Set is safe for kids to use and have various sized paw and bone shapes. Each cutter is made out of stainless steel with a removable plastic cover to protect hands.

Pansino recommends using an easy-to-clean wooded surface to arrange a barkuterie board. This Totally Bamboo Paw Shaped Cutting Board is lightweight and durable, and the shape should indicate to your human guests that the spread on top is meant for dogs.

Dipping Dish

Delling Heart-Shaped Ramekins

A ramekin dish can hold a dipping sauce, like peanut butter or plain yogurt.

“I like to theme my barkuterie boards for the occasion and use ramekin dishes in shapes like hearts and stars to play up the theme,” Pansino said.

These Delling Heart Shaped Ramekins are made of porcelain and can be easily cleaned in the dishwasher.

Dogs-Only Signage

Small Chalkboard Signs

Amazon

Pansino strongly recommends placing a sign alongside your barkuterie board for two very important reasons–to let your visitors know it’s okay to give these food items to your dog and to keep guests from accidentally nibbling on doggie treats. These Small Chalkboard Signs come with stands and sticks of chalk. You can use them to direct your guest towards human foods, and they are easily erased with a damp cloth.
