It’s been at least a decade since my husband and I bought a new rug with confidence, and we can thank our very accident-prone cat and dog (as well as the newest human additions to our family) for that. Our pets have a bad habit of doing their business on any and every carpet or pile of soft fabrics, and since our longtime pet stain and odor cleaner was no longer getting the job done, we decided to give Rocco & Roxie’s Professional Strength Stain & Odor Eliminator a shot. Read on to see if this product helped save our smelly carpets.

Process and Ease of Use: Self-explanatory

Rocco & Roxie’s Pro Strength Stain & Odor Eliminator is a “natural, bio-enzymatic formula” that’s designed for cleaning up pet urine, vomit, feces, and other accidents. The enzymes work by breaking down ammonia, bacteria, and other organic matter that causes urine to smell and stain.

The spray bottle is easy to use, and the directions are pretty cut and dry. The brand suggests using a “liberal amount” and soaking the area for five to ten minutes for surface stains or up to an hour for deeper stains. For the most severe messes, the company recommends absorbing the excess liquid with a towel, placing a weighted object on top to further draw out the unwanted stain, and then vacuuming the area once it’s dry. We also appreciated that a special carpet cleaning machine or professional cleaner was not required to clean up the mess.

You can also use this product in the laundry for clothes and bedding. The company suggests that you use about a cup of the solution, pre-soak the fabric for about 30 minutes in warm water, then wash as usual.

Effectiveness and Scent: Strong

Rocco & Roxie wasn’t playing around when it labeled this a “professional strength” cleaner. We sprayed it on a 6-inch stain on a low-pile carpet and its strong, chemical-like mint fragrance immediately overpowered our living room. It easily had the most overpowering scent of all four of the products we tested, but the trade-off is that the formula can tackle new and long-time urine odors and stains. The scent was faintly detectable up close after washing and eventually wore off in the following days.

If the light spot on the back of the rug was any indication, it deeply cleaned the stained area and left the carpet in even better condition than the surrounding area. After treatment, using a UV blacklight, there didn’t appear to be a stain spot on the backside of the carpet either.

Ingredients: Safe for pets and kids

The product is made with water, advanced biological blend, non-ionic surfactant, odor counteractant, and opacifier. It’s labeled as “safe for carpets, pets, and children.” Additionally, this product is chlorine-free, color-safe, and has earned the Carpet and Rug Institute’s seal of approval. Its uses extend beyond carpets and upholstery, too. You can use it on pet crates or cages, litter boxes, bedding, and even in vehicles. 

Price: Reasonable on the wallet 

Rocco & Roxie’s Professional Strength Stain & Odor Eliminator retails for $20 (or $50 for a gallon), which is fairly reasonable considering its effectiveness. We’ve found milder-strength products for $6 to $15, while specialty brands with more “advanced” formulas go for $20 to $40. Plus, if the solution fails to remove odors or stains, the company promises to refund in full.

Competition: Options to appease your nose and budget  

We tested a total of four enzyme-based pet stain cleaners, and Rocco & Roxie Pro Strength Stain & Odor Eliminator placed last, solely due to its overpowering scent, which irritated our sensitive noses. Otherwise, the Rocco & Roxie product performed superbly. See how the other three products ranked below:

Angry Orange Pet Odor Eliminator: This 8-ounce concentrated bottle ($23 MSRP) that we also tested is the equivalent of one gallon of cleaning solution after water is added. It was our favorite of the four we tested because we preferred the pleasant citrus scent over the other fragrances, and we found that the product was also effective in getting rid of urine odors and stains both old and new. 

Bubba’s Rowdy Friends Pet Stain & Odor Terminator: Our second favorite product of the group is a Carpet and Rug Institute-approved natural enzyme cleaner ($58 MSRP). It comes in a one-gallon bottle but doesn’t include a spray nozzle. The formula’s mint scent was the least overpowering of all of the products we tested, and we also found it effective at getting rid of our dog and cat’s pee stains and odors.

Sunny & Honey Pet Stain & Odor Miracle: This bio-enzymatic spray ($40 MSRP) had a fairly strong mint scent. The 32-ounce spray bottle also banished away pesky pet odors and stains on all of the washable rugs in our tests. It came in third on our list solely based on its higher price and not-so-subtle fragrance.
