We purchased the Furhaven Pet Plush Orthopedic Sofa so our writer could put it to the test. Keep reading for our full product review.

Pets deserve comfort too. The Furhaven Pet Plush Orthopedic Sofa offers extra cushioning for dogs that need a little more love and support for their tired bones. Orthopedic dog beds can provide extra cushioning for dogs that struggle to get comfortable or that have arthritis. I tested, well, technically my dog tested, the Furhaven to see if it offered extra comfort and cushioning for an arthritic dog.

The Furhaven offers incredible support and cushioning, plus a washable cover, which is an absolute must for a dog bed in my book. The Furhaven comes in five sizes based on the weight of your dog. My black lab Maggie weighs 65 pounds, so I ordered the jumbo size in stone gray. I ordered gray, hoping it would hide hair, so I wouldn’t have to wash it as often. The jumbo size fits dogs up to 95 pounds; large works for dogs up to 55 pounds. Maggie probably could have used a smaller size and still had plenty of room. The jumbo took up more space in our living room than I liked.

Maggie wasn’t the first one to try this dog bed. I figured if it’s good enough for a dog, it might be good enough for a person. I tried it, and so did several of my children. After lying on this bed, I was jealous of my dog. We loved it so much that we didn't let the dog try the bed for the first few weeks. My children and I used it as a floor cushion. It was perfect for propping up my head while watching TV or playing a game.

Marketed as orthopedic, it's true. It contains an eggshell foam that’s Certi-PUR US-certified, meaning it's free of harmful chemicals. The eggshell foam allows the body to mold into the cushion at high-pressure points while allowing air to flow around the body. If it can do that for a full-grown adult, it can do that for a dog that weighs half of what I do.

The suede fabric on the bolsters was super soft and comfortable, as was the shaggy faux fur over the body of the bed, creating fur-friendly heaven.

After laying on this bed, I was jealous of my dog.

I reluctantly handed the bed over to our pampered pooch. Maggie laid her head on the bolsters and leaned against them as a support. Our dog has some arthritis, and sometimes, when she gets up, she’s a little stiff. I wouldn’t say that the Furhaven prevented that stiffness, but she didn’t have trouble getting comfortable. On her first night on the bed, it took her about 30 minutes to relax and fall asleep. It didn't matter that it was an unfamiliar bed.

I was curious to see how well the bed held up after she’d been using it for a while. Sometimes the bolster needed to be fluffed and readjusted, as did the cover. Overall, considering how much Maggie circled and shifted, it was reasonably easy to maintain.

Maggie is mostly an outside dog, so I wanted to see how this bed would do on our porch. It’s absorbent, so I definitely wouldn’t leave it on our porch in a Pacific Northwest rainstorm, but she snuggled into it for a little extra warmth. I liked the bolster because it gave her a back or head a rest spot when she wanted to get out of the wind.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the cover machine washable?

The Furhaven’s cover is removable and machine washable. Don't get a pet bed without a machine washable cover. Pet messes can happen any time, even if you have the best potty-trained pup.

Before you can wash it, you have to remove the foam and the bolster in separate cover compartments. The compartments have long zippers, so it wasn’t hard to get either the foam or bolster out.

I followed the directions and washed the cover in cold water on gentle and air-dried. Air drying concerned me a bit. I live in a humid climate, and air drying can be a problem since some fabrics take forever to air dry and start to smell sour. I need not have worried. I hung the cover in my bathroom, and it dried within a couple of hours. Putting it all back together only took about three minutes. I had to adjust the cover over the foam pad, but other than that, the cover slid right back on and zipped. A dog bed that’s this easy to clean goes to the top of my list.

Was it big enough for the dog?

Furhaven’s sizing is generous. I rather the bed be too big than too small. If it was too little, Maggie probably couldn’t use it at all. The jumbo was so generously sized that if one of the kids wanted to lay with her, there was plenty of room. If I ordered another one, I would get the large rather than the jumbo. Maggie is close enough to the 55-pound weight limit; I suspect it would fit her better.

Is it worth the price?

It’s worth it. Our dog has three beds in various places in our home. This is the first dog bed I’ve laid on myself. It’s that comfortable. I am seriously tempted to buy one of these as a floor cushion for my kids. I would if was smaller and not awkward to hide.

Furhaven Pet Plus Orthopedic Sofa vs. Big Barker 7” Pillow Top Orthopedic Dog Bed

The Furhaven and the Big Barker have a lot in common. They have bolsters, foam, and soft, comfortable covers. The Big Barker offers extra luxury that the Furhaven doesn’t have. It has a seven-inch foam base with foams of varying densities to provide contoured cushioning. That’s a step up from the eggshell design of the Furhaven.

The Big Barker is geared toward larger breeds, which means all of the sizes support heavier weights. In comparison, the Furhaven is designed to help small and large breeds, so it’s less targeted to a bigger dog's needs.

Pricewise, the Big Barker is four times more expensive than the Furhaven. I probably wouldn’t splurge on the Big Barker unless my dog had severe mobility issues. The Furhaven had excellent pressure relief, even for a person over 100 pounds, and the price was easy to swallow.

Final Verdict

Yes, get it. I would get one for myself.

Not that I want to lay on the floor on a dog bed, but I missed when this orthopedic sofa was mine before we gave it to Maggie. It’s incredibly comfortable and contours to the body. Plus, the bolster provides the dog with some back support or acts as a headrest.
