We purchased the Casper Dog Bed so our writer could put it to the test. Keep reading for our full product review.
Casper wasn’t the first company to come up with the bed-in-a-box idea, but with a boost from social media, the sleep retailer quickly rose to fame as one of the most popular brands. Casper expanded beyond mattresses for humans with a dog bed—a pretty fancy-looking one, too. As someone who has slept on and loved Casper mattresses, I had to know if my four-legged fur babies would feel the same way.
The Casper Dog Bed arrived the same way the regular mattresses do—vacuum-sealed and rolled up in a box. Of course, it was a much smaller box, and it was a lot lighter; I could pull it out of the box by myself. After removing it, I cut open the plastic wrap, and all of the pieces immediately started to expand. I was expecting one intact dog bed, but it requires assembly with five separate components: the mattress and four supportive foam bolsters. It also included a mattress cover and a dog toy.
After five minutes, all of the pieces had expanded, and I began assembly. The mattress cover has two zippered sections. One fits the main mattress piece, and another continuous zipper closes around all of the bolsters. It was easy to zip the mattress into place. Inserting the bolsters took a little more finagling. It was tight and a little challenging to get everything to fit, but I squeezed them all in and got the zipper fully closed. After that, the pieces continued to expand and form into place.
The Casper Dog Bed isn’t a standout decor piece when it comes to looks, but it’s pretty enough. It looks a lot better than other dog beds I’ve owned. It looks like a memory foam mattress with outlined, bolstered edges. It comes in three colors—gray, blue, and a light tan color—all fairly neutral, and at least one should coordinate with your home decor. I chose gray. It blended nicely with my gray and navy-themed bedroom.
Its removable cover is machine washable. I threw it in the wash in cold water, tumble dried on low, and it was good as new.
My dog went to it right away, curling up on the mattress portion and laying its head down on a bolstered edge like a pillow. My dog weighs about 70 pounds, and the large size bed was big enough for curling up with some room to spare. The mattress also held up under my dog's weight. Unlike other dog beds that flatten over time, the Casper Dog Bed provided extra cushion and held its shape.
As for the toy that came with it, my German shepherd mix had it ripped to shreds within three minutes, and polyfill littered the room. The added toy was a nice extra touch. However, if you have a prolific chewer or a “German shredder,” don't expect the toy to last long.
I kept the bed upstairs in my bedroom, and every night, my dog chose it over his other bed. My dog alternated between resting his head on the bolstered edges or curling up in the center. My pup seemed equally comfortable in both positions. And the cats liked it too. In the middle of the day, I would catch them curled up together in the corner of the bed, pushed up against the bolsters.
The Casper Dog Bed isn’t a standout decor piece when it comes to looks, but it’s pretty enough. It looks a lot better than other dog beds I’ve owned.
The cover is designed with durability in mind, and even after several months of use, there were no rips or tears in it. I noticed it attracts dog hair and gets pretty dirty. The gray hid dirt a little bit, but I imagine it would show up more on the lighter colors. Its removable cover is machine washable. I threw it in the wash in cold water, tumble dried on low, and it was good as new. Casper also says if you run into tough stains—something that’s inevitable with pets in the house—you can use an enzyme-based cleaner to spot clean it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Casper Dog Bed come in different sizes?
The Casper Dog Bed comes in three sizes: small, medium, and large. The small measures 26 x 19 x 6 inches with an inner sleep area of 19 x 12 x 3 inches and is designed for dogs up to 30 pounds. The medium measures 33 x 25 x 6 inches with an inner sleep area of 25 x 17 x 2 inches and is designed for dogs up to 60 pounds. The large measures 45 x 35 x 7 inches with an inner sleep area of 35 x 25 x 2.75 inches and is designed for dogs up to 90 pounds.
What’s the Casper Dog Bed made out of?
Like Casper’s memory foam mattresses, the dog bed is two layers of memory foam: visco-elastic and polyurethane memory foam. This combination provides pressure relief for your dog while also giving it the support it needs. The removable cover is polyester, nylon, and olefin, one of the strongest microfibers available. It can stand up to pawing, digging, and scratching.
Does the Casper Dog Bed have the same return policy as the mattresses?
The dog bed doesn’t come with the same 100-night sleep trial as Casper’s mattress, but you get 30 nights to see if your dogs love it. Within that time, you can return it for a full refund, free of charge.
Casper Dog Bed vs. Frisco Rectangular Bolster Cat & Dog Bed
If you like the bolster-style dog bed but don’t want to shell out as much cash, the Frisco Rectangular Bolster Cat & Dog Bed may be a good option. Like the Casper Dog Bed, it has raised edges for your pup to lay its head, but it’s not as sturdy and doesn’t hold its shape as effectively. Instead of memory foam, it’s made with virgin polyfill, which doesn’t have as much support but is comfy. The Frisco bed doesn’t have a removable cover, but the whole bed is machine-washable, so it’s also still easy to clean. The large size retails for around $32 in comparison to Casper's $229.
One of the best dog beds you can buy.
I’ve gone through a lot of dog beds, and the Casper Dog Bed is the best one I’ve seen. It’s large, supportive, and it holds its shape while contouring around your pup. And it has a removable, machine-washable cover, so when you run into the inevitable pet mess, you can easily clean it.
