As most pet owners know (unless you’re the owner of one of these breeds that don’t shed) the downside to owning a pet is their near constant shedding. Getting pet hair off your clothes, carpet, furniture and out of your car can become an all-consuming challenge. But the right pet hair remover can make the job a lot simpler. You might even be able to wear that black shirt again.
We purchased 21 pet hair remover tools and tested them in our New York Lab The Lab, evaluating their performance, design, and ease of use. A group of volunteer testers used these products on chairs, clothing, pillow cases, and flooring that was covered in synthetic cat hair to see how each pet hair cleaner performed on a variety of surfaces. Where possible, we tested on real pet hair, using items that testers brought from home.
Our favorite pet hair remover, the Analan Mini Pet Hair Remover Brush, has three edges with gear-shaped teeth to effectively comb through all types of fabric and remove pet hair. It also has a comfortable handle and can easily be rinsed off in the sink after each use.
Here are the best pet hair removers for getting your clothing and furniture fur-free, with data gleaned from hours of combined testing.
Best Overall
Analan Mini Pet Hair Remover Brush
Compact size
Effective for deep, embedded hair
Comfortable to hold
Labor intensive
Confusing user manual
The Analan Mini Pet Hair Remover Brush is our best overall pick because its unique, three-sided design offers several ways to clean in a compact, ergonomic shape. Our tester was able to quickly pick up embedded hair after just a few swipes.
"It easily pulled embedded hair from surfaces," our tester noted, describing the satisfying performance of the Analan.
The multi-sided Analan has three different serration sizes, with the widest serrations designed to allow for quick scraping of larger surface areas. Tighter serrations help snag hair from stubborn surfaces where pet hair sticks most. You can also clean in sequence, attacking the same area with gradually finer serrations to pick up big messes, then capture the excess. The corners can be used to wedge pet hairs out of crevices.
The triangle shape and handheld size of the Analan also provides easy ways to grip the hair remover. "It fits nicely in the hand," one tester said. "And it's designed in such a way that the user can hold it at whichever angle is most comfortable."
Plus, since it's essentially a plastic wedge, with no crevices or nooks of its own, cleaning the Analan is as simple as rinsing it off in the sink.
While the Analan was convenient, comfortable, and extremely effective, its handheld size gave it a substantial limitation, since you can only scrape a few inches at a time. For most fur cleanups, the Analan was perfect, but you might want to seek a larger pet hair remover if your goal is de-furring rugs or other large items.

Best Budget
Evriholder FURemover Pet Hair Removal Broom
Adjustable handle
Cleans both carpet and hard flooring
Multifunctional
Hair sticks to rubber head
This cross between a broom, rake, and squeegee is an essential item in your pet hair removal tool kit, according to our tester. It works on hardwood, tile, carpets, and vinyl to help remove the pet fur with a double-sided broom and squeegee head. On smooth floors, it works better than a traditional broom and dustbin because it traps the fur in its teeth, but be wary of stray hairs that may not easily come off its teeth after cleaning.
"It did a great job at removing hair," our tester said. "When using it on a high pile rug the hair came up in a ball that was easy to pick up. On a more flat surface it worked pretty well too."
The telescopic handle adjusts from 3 to 5 feet, making it easy to sweep under your bed, sofa, and other hard to reach places.
The squeegee side of this broom also offers more cleaning capabilities, such as cleaning around your dog's water bowl or wiping nose-printed door panes. The brush head can also be removed for easy cleaning and storage.

Best Roller
Evercare Pet Hair Extra Sticky Lint Roller
Easy to refill and remove sheets
Picks up large amount of pet hair in one swipe
Don't have to touch pet hair when removing sheets
Not eco-friendly
Does not feel extra sticky
You can't go wrong having a sticky lint roller in your pet hair cleaning regime, and this roller by Evercare Pet is a great choice. Our tester said it quickly picked up a large amount of hair with just one swipe. This roller has a plastic handle that's contoured to fit comfortably in your hand while rolling. This roller was also easy to refill and could come packaged with two extra lint rolls.
"Picks up a good amount of hair in one swipe," our tester said. "It rolls smoothly too."
Dimensions: 9.45 x 4.29 x 2.52 inches | Material: Plastic
Best for Furniture
ChomChom Pet Hair Remover
Eco-friendly alternative to disposable lint rolling sheets
Quickly cleans upholstery
Intuitive to use
Hair can become caught in dust bin
Awkward location for bin release button
When you need to clean pet hair off of your furniture or blankets in a hurry, the ChomChom Roller should be your go-to. It looks like a lint roller, but instead of sticky tape, you’ll find textured red fabric underneath the hood. Roll it over your intended target a few times and the pet hair will almost instantly disappear. "I was impressed at how easy and efficient the product is to use, and there's no need to stop and remove a sticky sheet every few swipes like with a [traditional] lint roller," our tester said. This roller is 7.5 inches wide, so you can cover even large areas fairly quickly.
Our tester found this roller worked best on upholstery, but also found it effective for clothing, blankets, and jackets. Keep in mind that it works better on items that are taut, so if you want to use it on clothes or a bedding, hold the item tight while using. Our tester's only gripe is this roller does not easily empty, as she had to scoop some hair out of the dust bin. She also said the release button was in the exact place where she wanted to rest her thumb, so she accidentally opened the dust bin several times during testing. However, this minor design flaw does not detract from this roller's obvious efficacy at removing pet hair quickly and easily from furniture.

Best for Carpets
Uproot Cleaner Pro Reusable Pet Hair Remover
Works well in crevices
Easy to clean
Does not snag carpets
Not best for delicate fabrics
Labor intensive
A similar style of this reusable pet hair remover tool went viral on TikTok earlier this year for a good reason. Our tester said this tool picked up hair quickly and it easily piled into a ball off the tool. This tool's scored edge makes it a great option for high pile and density carpets, where pet hairs are easily trapped. Our tester also noted this tool was comfortable to use and the double edge offered more flexibility in how you can hold it. While Uproot Clean has many tools designed for different pet hair cleaning needs, we found that this tool was great at cleaning crevices. It could easily catch hair between a base board and carpet or between couch cushions.
We would not recommend using this tool on delicate or fuzzy, knit fabrics as they could be snagged. Not to worry though, as our tester said that it did not snag more durable materials such as upholstery and carpet. While this tool is a great option for high traffic areas in your home, where you know pet hair accumulates, we would not recommend trying to use it as an all-area tool. It's quite labor intensive and does require several swipes to fully pick up all the hair in one spot. While this tool may require a bit of elbow grease and attention to detail, we love its effectiveness and comfortable handle, making it a great option for carpets around your home.

Best for Laundry
Smart Sheep Wool Dryer Balls
Shortens dry time of laundry
Natural fabric softener
Easy to maintain
Not best for delicates
Dryer balls not only cut down on your clothes dry time, but also are a great way to effectively remove pet hair without adding any extra work to your cleaning routine. These dryer balls by Smart Sheep impressed our tester with their effectiveness at removing hair in a full load of laundry. Wool dryer balls work by adding extra air circulation to a dryer cycle, resulting in short dry times and removing static that results in fabric cling and remaining pet hair.
Our tester noted these dryer balls would be a great option for pet owners who have blankets, towels, or other laundry that experience frequent pet hair cling. While wool dryer balls are a great option for natural fiber clothing, they may not be best for drying delicate clothing and spandex materials. In addition to being a great pet hair remover, these dryer balls act as a natural fabric softener, so there's no need to use additional liquids or dryer sheets in your laundry. They also require no upkeep and can be used in over 1,000 loads before needing to be replaced.

Best for Travel
Lilly Brush Mini Pet Hair Detailer
Rounded and corner edges
Palm-sized
Picks up large amount of hair
Not best for clothing
If you frequently travel with your dog in the car or even on planes, this tiny pet hair detailer by the Lilly Brush Store, is a great tool to have with you. This detailer also can be clipped to a keychain, so you never leave home without it. Our tester appreciated its simple, yet effective design which allows for easy cleaning of tight corners and broad swaths of fabric. Although this detailer was great on taut fabric, such as upholstery, our tester said she would not recommend it for removing hair from clothing.
She also noted this detailer picked up a large amount of hair after just one swipe and balled it up neatly. Although it's recommended that you clean this tool with a damp cloth, our tester also found it effective to rinse it in a sink, if there are some stubborn hairs stuck on the rubber. We recognize that this tool's small size does require more effort for cleaning large areas, but for quick, everyday messes, we think it's more than sufficient. Whether you need to quickly clean upholstery in a rental home, or wipe off your car's upholstery, this tool is a great on-the-go option.

Best for Cars
Lilly Brush Pro Pet Hair Tool Kit
Great for deep cleaning
Multi-surface tools
Finger strap on wide detailer
Awkwardly long handle on crevice tool
Cleaning and detailing a car's interior is already a hassle, and it can be an even bigger project, if you have furry passengers. This pro detailing kit by the Lilly Brush store makes removing pet hair from your car completely hassle free. The wide detailer tool allows you to quickly swipe pet hair off of seats and floor mats. The finger strap also gives you added security while working and makes it more comfortable to grip the tool. Our tester said she loved how the detailer tool had both rounded and sharp corners, so that she could clean multiple surface types and angles.
The crevice tool in this kit is great for those hard-to-reach nooks and crannies between and under seats. It has an extra-long 14-inch handle, so you can reach deep into cracks. Keep in mind our tester did say it was a bit awkward to maneuver with such a long handle. Similar to the Lilly detailer tool we featured as our best for travel pick, these tools are also easy to wipe off with a damp cloth, if there are hairs stuck on the rubber.
Dimensions: 15.75 x 6 x 0.75 inches | Material: Plastic and rubber
Our top pick is the Analan Mini Pet Hair Remover Brush because it’s easy to use, works on many surfaces, including rugs (which can be a challenge when it comes to pet fur removal), and is inexpensive. If you're looking for an affordable cleaning option, the Evriholder FURemover Broom will clean carpets and upholstery, and double as a squeegee for tile and vinyl floors.
Whichever pet hair remover you pick, remember that consistency is key to success; the more you use your pet hair remover of choice, the less hair you’ll have to remove from your furniture and clothing. Of course, you’ll also want to groom your cat or dog regularly to stop the problem at its source.
How We Tested the Pet Hair Removers
After purchasing 21 pet hair remover tools, we tested them in The Lab in Brooklyn, New York to evaluate their performance, design, and ease of use. A group of volunteer testers used these products on chairs, clothing, pillow cases, and flooring covered in synthetic hair to see what surfaces they were most effective on and what surfaces they didn't clean at all. Some of our testers brought in slip covers with real pet hair from their homes. Each tester was asked to rate their product on a scale of 1 to 5 based on its performance in each of the tested categories. For products that were specific to laundry, we also had a washer and dryer on site. To test the design of each product, testers used the product on the surface that it's described to be best for and considered its comfort of use. While testing each product's effectiveness, we asked our testers to consider whether it took multiple passes to pick up all of the hair on an item, or if the product easily picked up all hair without issue. Lastly, we asked our testers to clean the products as directed and consider how efficient cleaning the product would be in a typical household. To further enhance our testing insights, we asked testers to also consider whether they'd use the product in their own home, if they'd recommend the product to a friend, and how the product could best be used.
What to Look for in a Pet Hair Remover
Type
What type of pet hair do you deal with on a regular basis, and how much of it is there? These are the primary questions to ask yourself when you’re choosing a pet hair remover. If it’s just a bit on your clothes and sofa from time to time, then a roller, like the Evercare Pet Hair Extra Sticky Lint Roller, is your best bet. If, however, you’re looking to clean your entire house from massive shedding, then you may need a vacuum—or even multiple tools for different surfaces.
Size
When determining which size product you need, consider where you’re going to be removing pet hair most often. If you want to get in small spaces or take it on the go, opt for something nimble and light. If, however, you’re trying to cover a lot of territory—such as all the floors in your home—you'll probably want something bigger.
Features
Some pet hair removers do double duty by tackling other cleaning tasks, too. For example, some will work on your windows, while others vacuum dust and dirt as well. If you don't mind having a tool that specializes in just pet fur, then we recommend looking for one that can tackle several surfaces and objects, such as our best overall pick, the Analan Mini Pet Hair Remover Brush, which performed well on carpet, upholstery, and clothing during our lab tests.
Why Trust The Spruce?
This piece was originally written by Anne Fritz, who as the proud owner of a lab-hound mix and—more recently—a rescue puppy, has spent over a decade learning how to remove pet hair from her life. Fritz likes using the FurZapper because it’s easy and brainless to toss it into the washing machine along with the rest of her family’s wash.
This article was updated by Emma Phelps, an Updates Writer for The Spruce Pets, with a new product list of fully tested products. These pet hair remover products were tested in The Lab by a group of volunteer testers and evaluated for their performance, design and ease of cleaning. Phelps has previous experience writing pet product reviews and also has grown up with newfoundlands and labrador retrievers. She is no stranger to removing pet hair from clothes, furniture, carpets, and bedding.
