We purchased Angry Orange Pet Odor Eliminator so our writer could put it to the test. Keep reading for our full product review.

As a pet parent to a dog and a cat (as well as two small but messy human beings), my husband and I know firsthand that accidents can (and will definitely) happen. As a result, we’ve begrudgingly avoided expensive and stylish rugs for our home for fear that they’ll eventually end up as a pricey pee and poop pad. We applied the Angry Orange Pet Odor Eliminator to existing and new stains on washable rugs in a variety of pile heights, sizes, and patterns, as well as a passenger car seat. Read on to see if this all-natural pet stain cleaner will allow us to buy our next high-end rug with confidence.

Process and Ease of Use: Must add water

This product can be purchased in 24- and 32-ounce spray bottles, as well as an 8-ounce concentrate and (coming soon) a gallon-sized refill. We ordered the petite, concentrated bottle. We do like that the concentrate means less plastic waste, but the downside is that you won’t be able to treat emergency stains immediately unless you have already the solution pre-mixed in a handy spray bottle. We didn’t find this to be an issue; we kept a pre-made bottle on hand just in case.

Per the manufacturer, each 8-ounce bottle equals 1 gallon of “industrial strength odor eliminator,” and we found that the preparation and cleaning process was easy and self-explanatory. Since our stain cleaning jobs tend to be minor, we followed the brand’s recommendation of using two tablespoons mixed in with 32-ounces of water, which we put into an empty spray bottle.

We do like that the concentrate means less plastic waste, but the downside is that you won’t be able to treat emergency stains immediately unless you have already the solution pre-mixed in a handy spray bottle.

According to the product instructions, stains on rugs should be blotted and absorbed by a paper towel as much as possible before spraying the solution. Once sprayed, the odor eliminator should soak for five to 10 minutes to get rid of the scent of pet waste.

Although we only used the product to treat fabrics, Angry Orange’s Odor Eliminator is also suitable for cleaning concrete and kennels (spray, soak for ten to 20 minutes, use a scrub brush or broom if desired, and rinse with water), as well as yards (mix a full gallon and spray on the affected areas). According to the manufacturer, it’s safe to use on tile, wood floors, and plants. Another nice thing about it is that it doesn’t need to be used with a carpet cleaning machine or a steaming appliance.

Effectiveness and Scent: A surprisingly sweet solution

As far as our naked eyes and nose could tell, the stains and scents on our carpets and car seats were gone when we checked back 15 minutes after cleaning the affected areas. Over the next few weeks, our pets peed again on our large 8-foot by 10-foot carpet, but they seemed to avoid the areas previously sprayed with the product.

We also used a UV blacklight to see if we could detect the stains before and after using the spray and noticed little or no stain lines on the backs of the rugs and on the car seat. Although it doesn’t have an official seal of approval from the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) like the other products we tested, we didn’t see any damage to the colors on our patterned carpets.

In our experience, we’ve also noticed that other products can add another fragrance layer on top of the existing urine scent, which can sometimes be worse than just the pee smell alone. This can be bothersome and migraine-triggering for some people (including me) who are very sensitive to synthetic fragrances. We found that wasn’t the case at all with this product, and we’ve opted to use it for all of our pet stains over our previous go-to products. If you do not like citrus fragrances, this may not be the product for you.

Ingredients: Natural, but not all contents listed

As parents to humans and furries, our first priority is making sure that ingredients are safe for all who live in the household. According to Angry Orange, the odor remover “is derived from the oil found in orange peels; biodegradable and non-toxic.” The brand doesn’t print its full ingredient list on the bottle, which may be problematic for those with severe allergies or health issues who need to know every ingredient included in a product.

The brand does note that the product “is a commercial-grade citrus odor eliminator that was originally formulated for use in industrial applications such as feedlots, sludge-ponds, poultry farms, rendering plants, pet waste removal companies, and boarding kennels,” and that it’s safe to use “virtually anywhere pet waste odor is an issue.”

Price: Best bang for your buck

At $23 MSRP for essentially one gallon’s worth of pet stain cleaner (or $5.75 for the equivalent of a 32-ounce spray bottle), Angry Orange’s Pet Odor Eliminator is reasonably priced. Other mass retailer-stocked options range anywhere between $6 to $15 for a standard 32-ounce bottle with specialty brands ranging from $20 to $40 for the same amount.

The Competition: Other options available

Compared to four other enzyme-based pet stain formulas, Angry Orange Odor Eliminator was favorite for its effectiveness, concentrated solution, and pleasant citrus fragrance. See how the other products performed:

Nature’s Miracle: As devoted users of Nature’s Miracle products (Urine Destroyer, MSRP $40 for 1 gallon; and Advanced Formula, MSRP $30 for 32 oz.) we preferred Angry Orange’s much more pleasant citrus scent to the former’s overpowering chemical-like smell.

Bubba’s Rowdy Friends Pet Stain & Odor Terminator: We also tested this natural enzyme cleaner ($58 MSRP) which comes in a one-gallon bottle and does not include a spray nozzle. We found it effective in eliminating stains and odors and liked that its mint scent wasn’t overpowering; it was one of our other favorites. For what it’s worth, the product is also approved by the CRI.

Sunny & Honey Pet Stain & Odor Miracle: This “advanced” bio-enzymatic spray ($40 MSRP) comes in a 32-ounce spray bottle and has a light mint smell that wasn’t bothersome. It effectively removed pet urine smells and stains on our washable rugs. Based on its price and scent, this product ranked among the middle of the bunch.

Rocco & Roxie Pro Strength Stain & Odor Eliminator: This natural, bio-enzymatic formula ($20 MSRP) comes in a 32-ounce spray bottle and also has a seal of approval from the CRI. It was our least favorite solely because of its overpowering scent. But, it was effective in masking pet urine smells on rugs.

Final Verdict

Yes, definitely worth every penny.

The Angry Orange Pet Odor Eliminator is effective at removing cat and dog urine stains and odors and seems to keep pets from soiling the same spot. It has a surprisingly pleasant citrus fragrance unlike the overpowering, chemical-like fragrances of other products.
